There was a time (and it really wasn’t that long ago) when Eddie Murphy, Chris Rock, Dave Chappelle, Robin Williams, and other comedians were better known for their outrageous stand-up comedy performances than for their movie roles. These jokers stalked club stages around the world and shot rapid-fire jokes for years before transitioning into feature film actors. But we shouldn’t be too sad for the change because they’ve also blessed us with some incredible films.

Today, we pay tribute to the greatest movies ever made by (current or former) stand-up comedians. It’s a selective list because not every great comedian is able to make an amazing film. So don’t yell at us because we didn’t include movies by comedic legends like Redd Foxx or Bill Cosby.
